Born with Down Syndrome and a fighting spirit, Tanya Ponich is an advocate for individuals with special needs. She has been spreading her message of hope and support for the past several years by promoting her belief that anything is possible.
Tanya has presented to families, professionals, doctors and teachers at numerous events across Canada and the United States. In 2007, she and her sister, Michelle hosted a workshop entitled, “Soul Sisters” at the National Down Syndrome Congress in Kansas City, Utah. ” Soul Sisters” touches on patience, unconditional love and just getting things done.
In 2008, Tanya was selected as Global Edmonton’s “Woman of Vision”, which celebrates the accomplishments of outstanding women in the community. She was also featured in the book, “Big Enough Dreams”, a project of the Edmonton Learning Community that promotes the positive image of individuals with developmental disabilities.
Positive feedback has motivated Tanya to become a voice for each person that is labelled disabled. With exceptional support, coaching and encouragement from her family and a strong belief in herself, she is focused on helping others by giving them hope, courage and strength.
“Whenever she makes an address her message remains the same; one of energy, motivation, overcoming boundaries to success and turning everything into opportunity. This is not easy work for Tanya, yet she persists because she feels it is important to tell others about the real life journeys, accomplishments and contributions of those we label disabled.”
